The name of Maltroie (from the Latin marturetum) perhaps finds its origins in the medieval period, after excavations unearthed remains from when Christians were “martyred” here. Our Maltroie, a hundred-year-old vine still pruned in Cordon de Royat, recalls a time when Chassagne was mainly a land of red wines.
